Tax governance & HMRC scrutiny: how to navigate the tax trap
Article: The no-regrets CFOMany CFOs feel confident about tax governance. Until HMRC asks for proof. Learn how to build defensible decisions with a minimum viable evidence pack.
In my role, I lead our tax risk management function, which brings together significant HM Revenue & Customs, private practice and in-house experience to support clients in managing their tax management responsibilities more proactively.
Before joining the firm in 2022, I worked at HMRC for nearly 13 years, primarily in its Specialist Investigation and Fraud Investigation units. I was HMRC's lead for the Corporate Criminal Offence and have a good overview of the international landscape from leading on multiple initiatives with tax administrations from around the world.
What I love the most in my current role is the wide range of clients: from getting small businesses ready for an exit, to helping dynamic firms get ready for the extra governance requirements that come with growth, to supporting some of the world’s biggest and most recognisable organisations. Each one understands its business better than anybody else. It's a great honour to listen, understand and then talk about what kind of support they need and how we can help.
Outside work, my wife and I are both passionate about having fulfilling careers while also being a present Mum and Dad to our two children. My son's taken a keen interest in golf which I may, or may not, have influenced. At weekends, I can often be seen driving the length of the North Wales coast shuttling the kids to their various football, gym, dance and swimming lessons.
