Iain Bourne

I have extensive experience in practical application of data protection law. I have worked for over 20 years at the ICO, taking on a variety of guidance and policy roles and generally helping organisations to comply with the law. I take a practical approach to compliance – demystifying a complex area of the law and helping organisations to focus on the areas of highest risk.

Prior to this role, I was the office lead on the European Commission’s proposal for the General Data Protection Regulation. I was also the principal author and policy lead for ICO’s guidance on data protection and employment, privacy notices, data sharing, personal information online and anonymisation. My previous roles involved handling complaints and policy issues relating to the National Health Service – the UK’s most complex information system, and setting up the teams and dealing with the first complaints when Freedom of Information law went live in the UK in 2005.

I manage the development and delivery of privacy related services, and I am a data protection subject matter expert for our ‘Brexit Room’. I have a deep understanding of the business, regulatory and technology challenges facing our clients.

In my free-time I like cooking and gardening. I have a pair of super-sweet cats and watch too much TV news.
