Simon Sheaf Partner, Head of General Insurance London +44 (0)20 7728 3280

I am a partner in the firm and lead our provision of actuarial and risk management services to the general insurance sector. I have worked in and consulted the sector for more than 30 years.

I have extensive experience working with a wide variety of general insurers, including commercial lines insurers, personal lines insurers, London market companies, syndicates at Lloyd's of London, and reinsurers.

Prior to joining the firm, I was the Chief Actuary for Travelers Insurance Company Limited in the UK and Ireland. In addition, following a large insurer entering administration, I fulfilled the roles of Chief Actuary and Chief Underwriting Officer for two years. As part of this role, I was responsible for all aspects of actuarial work.

I regularly fulfil the role of Independent Expert on Part VII and Section 13 transfers of insurance portfolios. In addition, I have experience in fulfilling the roles of scheme actuary on Schemes of Arrangement, and Skilled Person on Section 166 reviews. I also undertake expert witness assignments.

I have extensive claims reserving experience covering a full range of liabilities and classes of business.

I also have extensive Solvency II experience including the standard formula; developing and validating internal models; calculating technical provisions on a Solvency II basis; Solvency II balance sheets; the ORSA; reporting requirements; and providing advice and training to boards and senior management teams. In addition, I am now helping numerous clients with the implementation of IFRS 17.

Other areas I have substantial experience of include development and validation of capital models, strategic reviews of insurance operations, business planning, designing management information systems, actuarial due diligence in merger and acquisition situations, rating of portfolios and individual risks, reviews of rating adequacy, and review and optimisation of reinsurance programmes.

I used to have hobbies but now I have three daughters instead.
