Insolvency & Asset Recovery Director

Tom Aspin

I am a Director within the Insolvency & Asset Recovery team, specialising in digital asset insolvency, restructuring, investigations, asset tracing, and recovery. I advise insolvency practitioners, corporates, regulators, and legal counsel on complex digital asset matters, as well as on governance, risk, compliance, and internal control frameworks for businesses operating within the blockchain and digital asset sector.

My experience spans the United Kingdom, New Zealand, the Caribbean, and the Asia-Pacific region, providing a global perspective on digital asset disputes, recoveries, restructurings, and insolvency engagements. I have worked with a broad range of stakeholders to navigate complex cross-border issues, trace and recover digital assets, and address the unique challenges arising from the intersection of insolvency law, emerging technologies and regulatory frameworks.

My career combines experience in external audit, insolvency, forensic investigations, and financial advisory services with deep technical expertise in blockchain technology, cryptocurrency investigations, and digital asset recovery. I have led and supported numerous cross-border engagements involving digital assets, regularly acted as an expert witness in cryptocurrency-related court proceedings, and assisted stakeholders with complex tracing and recovery exercises across multiple jurisdictions. This combination of technical and insolvency expertise enables me to bridge the gap between emerging technologies and traditional restructuring and recovery processes.

Before relocating to the United Kingdom, I was the operational lead for the liquidations of Cryptopia Limited and Digital Asset Exchange Limited (Dasset) in New Zealand, and served as a subject matter expert to the liquidators of Bittrex Global (Bermuda) Ltd. Through my work on the Cryptopia liquidation, I helped facilitate the return of more than NZ$500 million in cryptocurrency to account holders, making it one of New Zealand’s largest and one of the world’s most significant on-chain insolvency distributions.

I am a Chartered Accountant with more than 12 years of post-qualification experience, including over six years specialising in digital assets and blockchain-related matters, and am recognised for my practical expertise at the intersection of insolvency, investigations, and emerging technology.
