Hannah Magee

I advise privately owned and investor-backed businesses on corporate tax, acting as the main point of contact for my clients' tax affairs. Working alongside CFOs and their finance teams, I help them manage tax in line with their own KPIs, whether that is cash, profit or investor returns. My work covers tax reporting and compliance, restructuring, employee incentives, international expansion and getting ready for future investment. I joined Grant Thornton from a Big Four firm and, before that, an award-winning boutique.

Many of my clients are consumer businesses, either founder-owned or backed by private equity or venture capital. A secondment in-house with a large veterinary group gave me first-hand experience of the pressures finance teams face in balancing tax risk with everything else on their plate.

Earlier in my career I specialised in employment-related securities, including EMI and growth shares. I still draw on that regularly, as share arrangements are often where the biggest problems surface in due diligence on an exit. I particularly enjoy restructuring work, such as demergers and group reorganisations, where getting the sequence of steps right makes a real difference.

Because corporate tax rarely sits in isolation, I work closely with our indirect tax, innovation tax, global mobility, private tax and audit teams. The aim is that clients get advice that joins up across their taxes and their wider business, rather than separate answers to separate questions.

I sit on the Women in Tax committee. I joined because the network made a real difference to me earlier in my career, and I want women coming through the profession now to have the same opportunities. Away from work, I enjoy the theatre, art galleries, Pilates and long walks, with the occasional run before a ski trip. In keeping with my sector focus, I am always pleased to fit in a good shopping trip.
