Alasdair Grainger

I lead our energy and net zero team, where we help clients deliver impactful transactions across all energy vectors, including offshore wind, energy from waste, and heat networks.

I've spent my entire career in the energy and climate space, and I’m passionate about using that experience to help organisations achieve their goals – whether that’s shaping a credible Transition Plan, negotiating the right commercial outcome for a project or delivering a major net zero investment.

My team specialises in designing and delivering funding models that unlock investment in complex infrastructure. I advise clients and investors on strategic positioning, options appraisal, negotiations, and transaction structuring. I’m currently leading several multi-year engagements across the UK energy landscape, helping clients navigate the commercial, regulatory and policy challenges at the heart of the transition to net zero.

Before joining Grant Thornton in late 2021, I was a senior civil servant at the heart of the UK Government. I led large (30-plus) teams in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), which is now the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and its predecessor, the Department for Energy and Climate Change. My role involved advising the ministers leading them, as well as the Treasury and Number 10.

Outside of work, I'm a dad to two young children and spend my spare time introducing them to the joys (and occasional fires) of campervan electrical systems. I volunteer with Engineers without Borders.
