Grant Thornton takes top spot in league table of restructuring advisers

Grant Thornton has been ranked as the number one most engaged financial adviser for mid-market restructurings, and number six for large-cap restructurings, in Reorg’s EMEA Adviser Rankings 2023.

Reorg’s Adviser Rankings examine the number of mandates on which legal and financial advisers have been engaged for newly initiated processes in restructurings, for both company-side and creditor-side, per calendar year.

The recognition follows a successful year for the Restructuring teams in which they advised on a number of engagements across Europe, including:

- McDermott Group: acted as an independent expert for the company on its proposed English restructuring plan and in the parallel Dutch scheme – Wet Homologatie Onderhands Akkoord (WHOA). The primary objective of the parallel restructuring proposals was the amendment and extension of secured credit facilities that matured across 2024 and 2025.

- Celsa Group: appointed to jointly draft Celsa Group's valuation report and to advise and support the Restructuring Expert within the judicial proceedings. This resulted in the first Spanish Court ruling in which the creditors proceeded to take over Celsa Group in accordance with the new legal tools under the Spanish Insolvency Act, in line with Grant Thornton analysis.

- Buckingham Group: appointed administrators for Buckingham Group Contracting, a £700 million leading tier-one contracting firm focusing on the civils, logistics, infrastructure, rail, and sports and leisure sectors - one of the largest insolvencies in the construction sector in recent years.

Grant Thornton also invested significantly in its UK restructuring team in 2023. The UK team welcomed 15 new joiners to the firm and there were 17 promotions including Jon Roden being promoted to Partner in the Birmingham office, and Steph Baker, Claire Martin and Gemma Sampson all promoted to Director.

Commenting on the accolade, Kevin Coates, Head of Restructuring, Pensions and Debt Advisory, Grant Thornton UK LLP, said:

"This recognition is testament to the dedication and continued efforts of our entire Restructuring team throughout the last 12 months. Through strategic investments in our team and leveraging our cross-border capabilities, we have consistently delivered quality advice, solidifying our position as one of the industry leaders in providing exceptional service to our clients."

Carlos Asensio, Head of Debt and Restructuring, Grant Thornton S.L.P. added:

“This recognition reflects the hard work, dedication, and level of expertise achieved by each of our Restructuring teams, including in Spain, both in national and cross-border transactions.”
