Introduction

When I first came across Ignite on social media, I had no idea just how much it would shape my future. What caught my attention most was the chance to get real insight into audit - to understand what the work looked like day‑to‑day and whether it might be the right path for me. The possibility of a place on the apprenticeship programme made it even more exciting.

Wonder if it's best not to name check a single media partner? Just because we work with multiple, it could be seen to be promoting one over others?

What is Ignite?

Ignite is an early‑careers insight programme designed to give young people hands‑on exposure to life in audit and working at Grant Thornton. Through interactive workshops, real tasks, networking with current trainees and professionals, and a look behind the scenes of the firm, Ignite helps you understand what accountancy and audit involve - and whether it’s the right fit for you. For many, it’s also a pathway into the apprenticeship programme.

I also loved the idea of meeting like‑minded people, and I can honestly say now: I’ve made friends for life.

Life as a trainee

My experience as an apprentice so far has been phenomenal. I’ve learned so much and grown personally - my confidence has skyrocketed. A typical day starts with a catch‑up call or meeting to run through tasks, and then I usually dive into mock or client audits. I’ve even had the chance to speak with clients directly already, which has been such an exciting part of my learning.

One highlight was attending Talent25, which helped me build deeper connections and understand the firm’s values and the opportunities available throughout my apprenticeship.

Another favourite moment was visiting a client site early on and getting to speak to clients face‑to‑face - it made everything feel real.

It hasn’t always been easy. My first exam was a big challenge. Balancing full‑time work and studying felt overwhelming at first. But after speaking to my buddy, who shared brilliant advice on planning and managing my workload, things began to click. Thanks to that support, I passed - and it felt amazing.

Friendship and Support in Audit

Working in the commercial audit department has been everything I hoped for. The culture is friendly, inclusive and incredibly supportive. Two people who’ve had a huge impact on my experience are Nicole and Elliott, who I first met during Ignite. We’ve been close friends ever since and always lean on each other when needed.

I’m also inspired every day by the people in the office. Nicole’s kindness and friendliness always stand out, and I really admire everyone’s work ethic and commitment to producing high‑quality work - especially my buddy, Betsy.

My Advice for Future Trainees

If you’re thinking about applying for a trainee role, I’d highly recommend trying to get some work experience first - it gives you a realistic view of the job and sets you up for success. And don’t hesitate to reach out to people on LinkedIn to ask what life at the firm is like. Everyone is kind, supportive and always happy to help.

Starting your journey can feel overwhelming, but with the right support and a willingness to learn, it can be one of the most rewarding decisions you’ll ever make.
