Lola joined Grant Thornton as a member of the Real Estate Tax team. Originally from Nigeria, she brings a global perspective, a passion for meaningful work, and a deep appreciation for community – both inside and outside the firm. In just eight months, she’s already made an impact, not only through her work but also by helping others find their place at the firm. Here’s her story.

Starting a new chapter

I’m from the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria and the first immigrant in my family. I moved to the UK about three years ago after joining a different large professional services firm. It was a big move, but an exciting one that opened up a whole new chapter for me professionally.

When I was looking for my next move, I wanted more than just a job. I was looking for work that felt meaningful – projects that challenged me and helped me see the bigger picture. I wanted to grow in a place where the work really matters, and that’s exactly what I found at Grant Thornton.

A culture of community and balance

I work in the Real Estate Tax team, and from day one, I’ve felt genuinely welcomed. The team has been incredibly warm and supportive, and I really feel that the people here are what make Grant Thornton different – their diversity, expertise, and how open and collaborative everyone is. You can really feel that you’re surrounded by smart, supportive colleagues who are always willing to share knowledge and help each other grow.

Being part of the International Hire Network has been a big part of what’s made the transition so smooth, too. It’s a space where I’ve been able to connect with others who’ve had similar experiences, and it’s helped me navigate some of the unique challenges that come with moving to a new country. I’ve even raised a couple of queries myself – it’s great to know there’s a community that understands.

I also really value the flexibility and hybrid working approach. It allows me to do my best work while still managing life outside of work. That balance has made a huge difference – it’s not just about being productive, but also about having space to breathe and be myself. Outside of work, I’m all about family. I’ve got three amazing nibblings (that’s nieces and nephews!), and catching up with them and the rest of my family is my favourite way to recharge.

Supported to do my best work

What I enjoy most about working in Real Estate Tax is the diversity – both in the clients we work with and the types of projects we get involved in. It’s not just one-size-fits-all; every day brings something new. I’ve had the chance to work across compliance, advisory, and transaction support, and that mix has really helped me build a deeper understanding of what we do as tax professionals and how we add value for our clients.

In just eight months, I’ve worked on transactions ranging from individual led purchases to deals involving private equity buyers. Getting to see how this plays out at different levels has been genuinely exciting. It’s given me a broader appreciation of the real estate space and how tax fits into the bigger picture.

I feel truly supported to grow here. The leadership in my team is approachable and always willing to provide guidance and feedback. Whether it’s technical resources, training, or just someone to bounce ideas off, I’ve had what I need to grow and feel confident in my work. It’s an environment that encourages development, and that’s been incredibly motivating.

Paying it forward

Since joining, I’ve referred a couple of people to the firm. It felt like a no-brainer – Grant Thornton is a place where people are supported, challenged, and given room to grow. The colleagues I referred bring strong technical skills and fresh perspectives, and I knew they’d thrive here. It’s exciting to help others find opportunities in a place that’s been such a positive experience for me.

The Real Estate Tax team is growing fast, and that makes it a really exciting time to come on board. There’s so much happening – from new projects to expanding client relationships – and that means there are plenty of opportunities to learn, contribute, and make an impact early on.

Because we work across compliance, advisory, and transaction support, you get exposure to a wide range of work. It’s a great environment for anyone who’s curious, eager to grow, and wants to be part of a collaborative, forward-thinking team.
