Jenny Brown, Head of Housing, comments on Housing White Paper - Fixing our broken housing market:
“We welcome the government’s plans to diversify the housebuilding market. Equality of access to opportunity is fundamental in creating a vibrant economy where no one is left behind. The plans to expand the £3bn home building fund should boost smaller developers, tackling regional disparities and ensuring communities outside London can become drivers of growth, creating thriving and sustainable communities where businesses can prosper.
“Forcing councils to reach ambitious housebuilding targets is laudable and will undoubtedly help first time buyers. In addition, we must not forget the urgent need for affordable, quality, rented and shared-ownership accommodation – the government needs to be ruthless about guaranteeing that social housing targets are reached within their overall targets and aspirations.
“Ensuring local councils can leverage these newly devolved powers is a fantastic opportunity, but comes with an increased need for regional skills and talent. Hopefully over time, increased access to housing will create a virtuous circle, but collaboration between the public, private and third sector will be fundamental in creating a vibrant economy the UK deserves.”
