I joined Grant Thornton's corporate and international tax team in 2015 to lead the London innovation tax team, having practised and specialised in innovation tax for 10 years.
My innovation tax skill, knowledge and experience has been informed by my 26 years in manufacturing, where I began as a production engineer in the aerospace and defence market through to operations management roles in start-up companies in the Cambridge area.
My industry experience gives me a unique insight into the scientific and technological challenges faced by my clients. I can quickly identify the opportunities that research and development and patent box presents by demonstrating how, and to what extent, they may qualify for the increasingly attractive tax reliefs. Building on my core aerospace and defence skills I have extensive client experience in oil and gas, consumer, technology, media and telecommunications, automotive, special purpose machines, large infrastructure projects and software.
I also play an active role in helping to shape innovation tax policy by sitting on HMRC's research and development consultative committee and the Treasury's patent box consultation team.
When I'm at home relaxing with my wife I enjoy playing my guitar – trying to emulate my heroes, and failing. I enjoy cycling to the station every day in foul weather and fair. I also try to take barbecuing to a new level by banning any burnt bits and, lastly, I'm the company secretary of the residents' management company where I prepare accounts, manage meetings and interface with the local council and building contractors.
