Norfolk Limited offers a unique insight into the performance of the county’s business community.
The annual survey analyses the most recently available financial accounts of the top 100 independent companies in Norfolk, based on turnover. It provides a yardstick against which the county can assess its overall economic performance and businesses can benchmark themselves against their peers.
Norfolk Limited is one of a series of detailed business studies carried out by Grant Thornton across different counties and we are proud these have become such a highly anticipated business event in the region. Comparisons in this report are drawn against neighbouring counties, most notably Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex.
How is Norfolk Limited compiled?
Norfolk Limited 2018 is compiled using the most recent publicly available accounts and is based on those 'for-profit' businesses that operate and are managed within the county.
The aim is to present an in-depth picture of how the county is faring based on the combined performance of those companies, which are subjectively assessed as fundamentally Norfolk businesses.
Excluded from the survey are a small number of very large businesses where ownership is overseas or where management and strategic decision makers are based outside the county. The most well known of these is Aviva. The results have also been adjusted for significant exceptional items, which would otherwise distort the overall results and underlying pattern of performance.
Not-for-profit entities in sectors such as housing, education and research are also excluded. However to not recognise the significant contribution these entities make to the Norfolk economy would be remiss. We have therefore separately analysed the results of entities which, based on size alone, would have been included in the main Norfolk Limited population.
This approach aims to provide a representative picture of the wealth creation within Norfolk and importantly, the retention and reinvestment of profits in the county - something that is fundamental to sustaining and growing a vibrant local economy.
What’s new for 2018?
We’re delighted to be partnering with Mills & Reeve LLP for the first time this year at our Norfolk Limited launch event to review and discuss the changing face of our county’s economy.
