Autumn Statement 2016 comment: Local government is the big loser in the Autumn Statement

Commenting on today’s announcement, Guy Clifton, Head of Local Government, Grant Thornton UK LLP said:

“Local government is ultimately the big loser in today’s Autumn Statement.  With adult social care already facing an acute funding crisis, the increase in national living wage to £7.50 will hit cash-strapped local councils hard as they struggle to cover costs.

"With an estimated £5.8 billion shortfall for adult social care between now and 2020, local councils simply won’t be able to cope, meaning either quality of service will plummet further or this increase costs is passed on to care providers in the charity and private sectors."
