"The last year has presented huge uncertainty for businesses of all sizes, with Brexit and the pandemic creating an ever-changing operating environment, which has been extremely difficult to navigate.
While the ongoing success of the vaccine programme has likely contributed to the boost in confidence seen in the market in June, businesses are still having to deal with the ups and downs of UK economic forecasts, ongoing complexity in their supply chains, and trying to embed some of the positive changes to the ways of working that have been accelerated by remote working.
The risk of a third wave of the virus in the UK also adds another layer of complexity to all of the uncertainty that businesses are already dealing with. Some sectors, such as travel, tourism and hospitality, have been harder hit by the recent extension of restrictions, but ongoing changes to guidance and deadlines affect all businesses.
However, the increased optimism in the market evidenced in our research, particularly around profit levels, tells us that business leaders are confident in their own business’ ability to weather the changes, and are becoming more accustomed to accepting and managing constant, unpredictable change in the wider market-place as a given."
