The Northamptonshire-based business Bambino Mio was founded around 20 years ago by husband and wife Guy and Jo Schanschieff. It's an award-winning brand of reusable nappies, swim nappies, potty-training pants, and related accessories, at the forefront of efforts to reduce environmental damage.

Did you know?

  • Disposable nappies can take up to 500 years to decompose
  • 4% of all household waste in the UK is disposable nappies (that's eight million per day and three billion per year)
  • An average baby uses 5,000 disposable nappies, but they only need 15 reusable ones

The Challenge

Today, Bambino Mio reusable nappies and other products are sold in more than 50 countries. To realise its ambition of encouraging permanent change in customer behaviour, it needed help to secure investment for growth in the UK and internationally.

"At Bambino Mio, we are on a mission to create nappies that do good. Our products are carefully designed to improve the experience for babies, as an affordable alternative to disposables and to tackle the huge problems the world is facing from plastic pollution."

How we helped

Our team has known Guy since 2012. In 2018, Guy decided that he wanted to conduct and explore a transaction. We started developing an understanding of the company's goals, concerns, and its unique sector of the market.

In 2020, Bambino Mio formally appointed us to run a strategic investment process. Although the project was paused for a period, our commitment to excellence ensured we remained in constant dialogue and resumed our work together in 2021: bringing our M&A advice to Guy, introducing him to the right strategic partners, and driving the process and valuation with key parties to create the best structure and deal for the shareholders.

“We’ve worked with Mike, Ryan, Gary and Nicola for several years, focusing on our growth strategy and identifying a strategic partner who understands our purpose and the scale of our ambition to become a global leader in reusable nappies. The Grant Thornton team delivered a fantastic outcome: investment from BGF. It gives us the support and capital to achieve our full potential and continue our exciting growth journey."

The results

We advised Bambino Mio through a highly competitive auction process to secure the £13 million investment from BGF, which will support it to expand and accelerate its growth in the UK and internationally.
